In everything giving THANKS!! By Stacy Jarrett

Last friday night was another amazing day in my life. I got a tattoo ‘clarity’, the Oasis family switched it on me with a surprise party, complete with a Couture Elements cake; we finally got a camcorder so we can record and share our Open Soul sessions and other activities. Unbelievable…dreams come through.
Its been six months since Ciline Morris and I embarked on our dream of a better Jamaica, one where our motto, the best in the world, ‘out of many one people’ is respected and afforded to all people, and all are allowed to positively participate in it.
Homosexuality is like the ‘Archilles’ Heel’ of our sweet Jamaica, labelled the most homophobic place on earth, and we acknowledge that all is cause and effect, and that we have equal responsibility in the cause and should have equal responsibility in the effect.
Our responsibility is the Oasis, a refreshing, renewing and supportive experience for LGBT Jamaicans, the intended effect: achieving the vision of a change in the gay community FIRST, where we recreate family and support each other, leading to a change in our country…where our motto ‘OUT OF MANY ONE PEOPLE’ becomes what we are about, eventually infecting the world with our positivity in the same way we have infected it with our music, sports and culture.
We are very aware that this will not happen immediately or even without issues, and so the personal motto is LEVEL UP…stage by stage…always aspiring to be better than before. We are happy to say…the change is coming baby
Oasis family: You are the bed of this vision. Thank you sooooo much for adopting it and supporting us when we feel like we want to give up. Thanks for our gift of the camcorder last night at our surprise ‘appreciation’ party, the revolution will be televised and archived, as we record this change.
Thanking the universe for the systems and people that will support this vision through to its fruition.
***Namaste**

Welcome to Our World- Couture Weekly

‘The peculiar evil of silencing the expression of an opinion is, that it is robbing the human race; posterity as well as the existing generation; those who dissent from the opinion, still more than those who hold it.  If the opinion is right, they are deprived of the opportunity of exchanging error for truth:  if wrong, they lose, what is almost as great a benefit, the clearer perception and livelier impression of truth, produced by its collision with error.’
~John Stuart Mill, On Liberty, 1859

Freedom of the press is a fundamental right that all sovereign states aim to adopt ; the people have a right to share their opinions with the masses if they so choose. It does not only apply to just words articulated by an individual as it spans all forums of media. We are all humans capable of free and independent thought- but how do we bring these thoughts across in a clear and meaningful manner?

Well for us in the LGBT community we have been blessed with the gifts of understanding and creativity. This creative gene we poses enables us to thing beyond the proverbial box- to dare to dream. Today a dream has been conceptualized and brought to life. I humbly present to you: COUTURE WEEKLY.

Couture Weekly is the Official Blog of Couture Elements. Couture Elements is a non profit LGBT organization in the beautiful city of Kingston Jamaica. Why ‘elements’ you may ask. The organization comprises of several sub-elements. Some of these sub- elements are; Couture Tours, The Oasis, The Underlined Response and now Couture Weekly. Couture Elements is headed by two strong and determined ladies- Ms. Stacy Jarrett and Ms. Ciline Morris. Together they form the Management team of Couture Elements along with their wonderfully diverse team.

But enough about the organization on the whole, let’s discuss the matter at hand; Couture Weekly. Couture Weekly is the Official Blog of Couture Elements. Chief among its aims is the production of quality reports on issues within our world- whether it be a hunger strike in Ecuador for Gay Rights or the announcement of legalization of same sex unions in New York City – we pledge to bring that story to you.

Open Soul
– ‘One Day My Soul Just Opened Up’
by Gemmia L. Vanzant

“One day my soul just opened up and things started happenin’
things I can’t quite explain
I mean I cried and cried like never before
I cried tears of ten thousand mothers
I couldn’t even feel anything because
I cried ’til I was numb.

One day my soul just opened up
I felt this overwhelming pride
what I was proud of only God knows!
Like the pride of a hundred thousand fathers
basking in the glory of their newborn sons
I was grinnin’ from ear to ear!

One day my soul just opened up
I started laughing
and I laughed for what seemed like forever
wasn’t nothin’ particularily funny goin’ on
but I laughed anyhow
I laughed the joy of a million children playin’ in the mud
I laughed ’til my sides ached
Oh God! It felt so good!

One day my soul just opened up
There were revelations, annihilations, and resolutions
feelings of doubt and betrayal, vengeance and forgiveness
memories of things I’d seen and done before
of places I’d been, although I didn’t know when
there were lives I’d lived
people I’d loved
battles I’d fought
victories I’d won
and wars I’d lost.

One day my soul just opened up
and out poured all the things
I’d been hiding and denying
and living through
that had just happened moments before.

One day my soul just opened up
and I decided
I was good and ready!
I was good and ready
to surrender
my life
to God.

So, with my soul wide open,
I sat down
wrote Her a note
and told her so.’

Got a poem like the one I just shared but too afraid to read it out loud- Open Soul the column has you covered. It doesn’t matter if you wrote it our you found it somewhere: poety is universal. Send it to us and who know you may just see it right here in Couture Weekly.

So now that you know the columns I’m pretty sure you want to know the team behind the blog. Well you’ll find out soon enough as well as how to contribute to the blog.

Hope you are as excited as I am. Our voices won’t be silenced, Won’t be silenced; I DARE THEM TO TRY!

‘If all mankind minus one were of one opinion, mankind would be no more justified in silencing that one person than he, if he had the power, would be justified in silencing mankind.’
~John Stuart Mill, On Liberty, 1859
